Each week we will include a fun fact or historic tidbit about our great hometown
Rural Free Mail Delivery in Boonton Township
Rural Free Delivery (RFD) was a program of the United States Post Office that began in the late 19th century to deliver mail directly to rural destinations. Previously, individuals living in rural areas had to pick up mail themselves at sometimes distant post offices or pay private carriers for delivery.
The Post Office began experiments with Rural Free Delivery as early as 1890. However, universal implementation was slow; RFD was not adopted generally across the country until 1902. The rural delivery service has used a network of rural routes traveled by carriers to deliver to and pick it up from roadside mailboxes. Rural delivery began in the Township with one rural route, RD#1. It was later expanded in the early 1960s to include a second route, RD#2 which covered the northern and western portions of the Township.
Box numbers were assigned as the carrier drove the route - so there was no order to the box numbering system along roadways. In some instances, such as construction of a new road, letters were added so, for example, an address would be RD#2, Box 152C. This numbering system led to much confusion for emergency responders and delivery drivers. By the 1990's the Township had five rural delivery routes before house numbers were required for the implementation of statewide Enhanced 9-1-1. As new rural delivery routes were added box numbers didn't change just the rural delivery route number, so RD#2 Box 370 became RD#5, Box 370 which led to further confusion. Two notable rural addresses were: the Municipal Building, RD#1, Box 201 and Rockaway Valley School, RD#2, Box 5 - today, some mail is still delivered to these institutions using the old rural delivery addresses.

Doolittle’s Landing Playground @ RVA Fields
In 2001, a group of community volunteers formed a committee to create a new playground at RVA Fields highlighting the Township's roots and the site's connection to aviation history.
The volunteers planned, held fundraisers, sold pavers and constructed the playground in the Spring of 2002.
After more than 20 years as a place enjoyed by thousands of children in our community, the Township Committee announced it will be upgrading Doolittle’s Landing in 2026.
Our playground vendor is working on some preliminary concepts before we host a meeting seeking community input which is planned for the Spring.
Stay tuned for this exciting project!!
