Boonton Township Trivia

Each week we will include a fun fact or historic tidbit about our great hometown

Here’s a 1929 photo of Jimmy Doolittle at the Rockaway Valley Airdrome - airfield of Aircraft Radio and RFL.

The hangar in this photo is the old hangar which is known as Building #3 today.

This was the plane (Consolidated NY-2 bi-plane) used for the first “blind take-off and landing” with only radio beams and instruments providing the pilot with directions to take-off, fly, and land the aircraft.

This technology was developed at Radio Frequency Laboratories (RFL) and Aircraft Radio Corporation (ARC) here in Boonton Township in the 1920s which allows aircrafts to fly today

in all weather conditions and at all times of the day or night.

Rockaway Valley Garden Club Press Release

The Rockaway Valley Garden Club has awarded its Arlene Persson Memorial Scholarship to three recent students who attend Mountain Lakes High School in recognition of their horticultural and/or environmental activities.

Ryan Lalani was awarded $1,500 for his outstanding horticultural projects for the town and school gardens, his leadership of the Environmental Club and participation as student liaison to the Mt. Lakes Borough Environmental Commission, and his environmental studies and projects in the NJ Governors STEM Scholar Program.

Alexandra Ananian received a $1,000 scholarship for her horticultural and educational activities revitalizing the Boonton Township elementary school garden, and for her work organizing the first Boonton Township Green Fair in conjunction with the Boonton Township Green Team and the community.

Yash Samat also received a $1,000 scholarship for his Trex Project collecting plastic for recycling, his participation as a student liaison on the Mountain Lakes Lakes Management Advisory Committee, and for the environmental community project that he led to create fish habitats in the lakes to preserve the ecosystem and reduce algae levels.

The scholarship is offered to students at seven local high schools and the County College of Morris who have demonstrated interest and effort in horticultural and/or environmental initiatives within their school or community.

The scholarship is given in memory of Arlene Persson, who was instrumental in the formation of the Rockaway Valley Garden Club in 1955. During the club's early years, Persson served as president. In 1961, Persson and other club members helped establish the Emilie K. Hammond Wildflower Trail at Tourne Park. For over 50 years, she provided support and inspiration to RVGC members in their efforts to reach out to the community about the importance of gardening and the environment.

In addition to its scholarship program, the Rockaway Valley Garden Club advances garden interests and knowledge among its members and the community-at-large. Its activities include planting and maintaining the Wildflower Trail at Tourne Park. RVGC also conducts mini-workshops at the Fallsview Rehabilitation and Nursing and maintains the gardens at Miller-Kingsland and Oscar Kincaid historic sites.

For membership information, contact Joanne Ludwig at marinobiondo@aol.com.
