Boonton Township Trivia

Each week we will include a fun fact or historic tidbit about our great hometown

The site of the current Municipal Building has served as the Powerville School from 1871 to 1968.

The property was a gift from the DeCamp family and over the years, three structures have been erected at the site. The original 1870 school built served until 1953 when it became the Municipal Building.

The 1926 and later 1953 additions served until 1968 when the students moved to the new addition at the Rockaway Valley School.

The original portion of the Rockaway Valley School, then known as the Valley Road School, was built in 1959.

The Newark College of Engineering established a satellite campus at the site for a few years.

The building was renovated to accommodate the municipal offices and police department - the wooden two-room school house was demolished at that time.

The new Municipal Building was dedicated on November 3, 1974.

The monthly RVGC Program will be held on October 10, 2023 from 11:00 am to 12 noon at the Boonton Township Municipal Building, 155 Powerville Rd, Boonton Township, NJ 07005.

The program will be about "Trees Through the Season" and will be presented by Jan Godek, a long time member of the Garden Club of Long Valley, The Washington Township Shade Tree Commission and was a tour guide at Frelinghuysen Arboretum for several years. Jan will inspire us with a visual look of how trees change through the four seasons of the year in our area, including a discussion of the types of trees and varieties. She will also focus on the different features of trees. Jan's beautiful slides were taken at local arboretums as well as public and private gardens in the tri-state area.

The Rockaway Valley Garden Club generally meets the 2nd Tuesday of each Month.

Meetings begin at 10: 00 am and are held at the Boonton Township Municipal Building, 155 Powerville Rd.

With Fall Weather Approaching, BTPD Reminds Residents to Drive Safely

Fall weather can be unpredictable, and drivers should prepare themselves for potential road hazards. Some of these hazards include fog, wet leaves, and an increased presence of deer in the roadway.

Fall is one of the most active times for deer, and typically if you see a deer in the roadway, you should expect others to follow, as they often travel in groups.

With unpredictable weather changes, driver's need to also remain aware of the potential for wet roads to become icy, especially if the overnight temperature dips low enough.

It is also important to remember to never park your vehicle over a pile of leaves. Doing so may cause a fire to start from your vehicle's exhaust system or catalytic converter.
