Joint Message from the Boonton Township Office of Emergency Management and the Fire Prevention Bureau
September is National Preparedness Month
Both the National Fire Protection Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency would like to emphasize the importance of being ready when disaster strikes, as such, this year's theme is
“Take Control in 1, 2, 3,”. The goal is to encourage everyone, especially older adults, to become more prepared in three simple steps.
The first step is to "Assess Your Needs". Everyone has unique needs and they need to recognize what those are before an emergency strikes. There are several factors that can affect the steps you need to take to prepare yourself and those you care for. Whether you care for pets, have children, or have a medical condition or a disability, it is important to know what your family will need to stay safe.
The second step is to "Make a Plan" as once you’ve assessed your needs, you can plan for what you would do, where you would go and what to bring if an emergency strikes regardless if it is for a fire or a natural disaster . Have an emergency supply kit which should include items that meet your individual needs.
Lastly , "Engage Your Support Network". Get to know your neighbors because they, along with your family and friends, can be a support network before, during and after a disaster by providing
emotional and practical support.

With Fall Weather Approaching, BTPD Reminds Residents to Drive Safely
Fall weather can be unpredictable, and drivers should prepare themselves for potential road hazards. Some of these hazards include fog, wet leaves, and an increased presence of deer in the roadway.
Fall is one of the most active times for deer, and typically if you see a deer in the roadway, you should expect others to follow, as they often travel in groups.
With unpredictable weather changes, driver's need to also remain aware of the potential for wet roads to become icy, especially if the overnight temperature dips low enough.
It is also important to remember to never park your vehicle over a pile of leaves. Doing so may cause a fire to start from your vehicle's exhaust system or catalytic converter.
