THE TOURNE COUNTY PARK AND TRAILS WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO SEVERAL REPORTS THIS WEEK OF BLACK BEARS DISPLAYING AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR TOWARDS PARK PATRONS

The Tourne County Park and Trails will remain closed until further notice due to several reports this week of black bears displaying aggressive behavior towards park patrons. Patrons running their dogs off-leash are the cause of the problem. Police are monitoring the situation.

Incidents like this can be avoided by not violating Morris County Park Commission Rules & Regulations, Article III, Prohibited Acts-Section 3. Pets must be kept on leashes not exceeding 6 feet in length.

You can check the status of the park on the Morris County Parks Commission web page: www.morrisparks.net

RVA Fields Parking Lot

The emerald ash borer infected the parking lot trees and trees along the Flight Path necessitating their removal. Before replanting the trees, the Township retained a traffic engineer to review the existing layout to improve safety, traffic flow and maximize the number of parking spaces. There are currently 283 spaces and the redesign will increase that number by 42 spaces.

Work began on June 20th and will continue over the next few weeks - the parking lot will be subject to intermittent closures during construction.

Once paved, the parking lot will be closed for 1-2 weeks. Park patrons will be directed to the auxiliary parking area behind the firehouse on Rockaway Valley Road.

All work should be completed before the start of fall soccer.

And then a secret is revealed and suddenly, she realizes how fragile her idyll is.

Winner of the Davy Byrnes Memorial Prize, Foster is now published in a revised and expanded version. Beautiful, sad and eerie, it is a story of astonishing emotional depth, showcasing Claire Keegan’s great accomplishment and talent.

A Message from Fire Prevention:

The July 4th holiday weekend is one week away and the following are some fireworks safety tips:

  1. Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water/hose nearby in case of accidents.
  2. Designate a safety perimeter of at least 35 feet away from ground fireworks.
  3. Ditch faulty fireworks. Sometimes fireworks don’t go off, but duds always pose a risk. The important thing to know is that you should never try to relight or approach a failed firework. Let duds sit for 5 -10 minutes before you put them in a bucket of water. This can prevent injury from a delayed ignition and disarm the firework permanently so you can safely dispose of it.
  4. Supervise children when they are handling sparklers. Sparklers burn at about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt some metals. Sparklers can quickly ignite clothing, and children have received severe burns from dropping sparklers on their feet or touching body parts.
  5. Don’t forget about your pets! Fireworks can be extremely stressful for pets, but there are ways to help reduce their fear and anxiety. Keep your pets indoors. Close the curtains or blinds and turn on the TV or radio to provide some distraction. Treat toys filled with their favorite food (frozen pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and apple sauce are good options) may also help keep their minds busy and distract them from the fireworks.
  6. Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.
  7. Never place a part of your body directly over a firework or hold a firework in your hand when lighting. To safely light fireworks, make sure they are secured on the ground away from people and animals and use a stem lighter such as a grill lighter.
  8. Only light one firework at a time. Lighting multiple fireworks at the same time increases the risk of accidents occurring from the fuse burning faster than designed.
  9. Avoid alcohol consumption when handling or using fireworks. This should be pretty self-explanatory.
  10. Consider safer alternatives to fireworks such as party poppers, bubbles, silly string, or glow sticks.

In addition to these tips, please be sure to follow all New Jersey state laws on legal vs illegal fireworks. As a rule of thumb anything that shoots in the air as far as display fireworks is illegal.

Have a safe and wonderful 4th of July!
