Boonton Township Trivia

Each week we will include a fun fact or historic tidbit about our great hometown

Our first Police Chief

Dewey Bott

served 1935 to 1968

The Boonton Township Police Department was founded in 1935. Chief Dewey Bott worked as a part time Police Officer with his other job being with the Morris County Road Department.

There was a phone in his home designated for police business. When he was not home, his spouse answered.

Dewey was the first full-time Police Chief along with several other part time volunteer Police Officers until 1968, at which time the Boonton Township appointed its first full-time Police Officer.

In 1968 Boonton Township expanded its department to 3 full time Police Officers - and the department took Chief Bott's home phone number 334-2419 as the new department number which served until 1990 when the Department began using the current 402-4000.

Grill safety tips from the Township Fire Official

Before firing up the grill this weekend, place it away from your house. Do not store or use a grill on a porch or balcony.

Leading factors contributing to grill fires are failure to clean, leaks or breaks, leaving the grill unattended, and having the grill too close to something that could catch fire.

🔥Grill Safety Tips🔥

🍔Propane & charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

🌭The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

🍔Keep children and pets at least three feet away from grill area.

🌭Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

🍔NEVER leave your grill unattended.

🌭Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it

Looking for Jane

Heather Marshall

4.42

14,365 ratings2,014 reviews

A debut about three women whose lives are bound together by a long-lost letter, a mother’s love, and a secret network of women fighting for the right to choose—inspired by true stories.

2017: When Angela Creighton discovers a mysterious letter containing a life-shattering confession, she is determined to find the intended recipient. Her search takes her back to the 1970s when a group of daring women operated an illegal underground abortion network in Toronto known only by its whispered code name: Jane.

1971: As a teenager, Dr. Evelyn Taylor was sent to a home for “fallen” women where she was forced to give up her baby for adoption—a trauma she has never recovered from. Despite harrowing police raids and the constant threat of arrest, she joins the Jane Network as an abortion provider, determined to give other women the choice she never had.

1980: After discovering a shocking secret about her family, twenty-year-old Nancy Mitchell begins to question everything she has ever known. When she unexpectedly becomes pregnant, she feels like she has no one to turn to for help. Grappling with her decision, she locates “Jane” and finds a place of her own alongside Dr. Taylor within the network’s ranks, but she can never escape the lies that haunt her.

BTPD To Conduct Seat Belt Enforcement Campaign

Law enforcement officers from the Boonton Township Police Department will join with police from around the country in cracking down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign.

Beginning May 22 and running through June 4, the annual “Click It or Ticket” national mobilization utilizes high visibility seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, in combination with local and national publicity efforts, to reiterate the life-saving value of seat belts.

According to the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, in 2022 there were 694 people in the state killed in traffic crashes. 40% of the motor vehicle occupants who died in these crashes were not wearing a seat belt. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that seat belt use reduces the risk of serious injury or death in a crash by 45%

In New Jersey, a key focus of this year’s Click It or Ticket campaign is to promote seat belt usage by adults in all seating positions in the vehicle, both front AND rear seats. The front seat belt usage rate in New Jersey currently stands at 92.97%. However, adults riding in rear seats are buckling up at a significantly lower rate, only 48% according to the most recent surveys.

During the 2022 Click it or Ticket campaign, 145 New Jersey police agencies participated in the two-week initiative. As a result of the effort, law enforcement officers issued 8,373 seat belt citations, 3,315 speeding summonses and made 278 impaired driving arrests.
