Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China

by Jung Chang

4.26 · Rating details · 104,368 ratings · 6,546 reviews
The story of three generations in twentieth-century China that blends the intimacy of memoir and the panoramic sweep of eyewitness history—a bestselling classic in thirty languages with more than ten million copies sold around the world, now with a new introduction from the author.

An engrossing record of Mao’s impact on China, an unusual window on the female experience in the modern world, and an inspiring tale of courage and love, Jung Chang describes the extraordinary lives and experiences of her family members: her grandmother, a warlord’s concubine; her mother’s struggles as a young idealistic Communist; and her parents’ experience as members of the Communist elite and their ordeal during the Cultural Revolution. Chang was a Red Guard briefly at the age of fourteen, then worked as a peasant, a “barefoot doctor,” a steelworker, and an electrician. As the story of each generation unfolds, Chang captures in gripping, moving—and ultimately uplifting—detail the cycles of violent drama visited on her own family and millions of others caught in the whirlwind of history.

Boonton Township Resident Receives Major Garden Club Award

Diane Nelson Holding her National Garden Club Award

Diane Nelson, a Boonton Township resident and a member of the Rockaway Valley Garden Club (RVGC) for over 50 years, was recently selected as this year’s recipient of the Golden Perennial Bloom Award by the Central Atlantic Region of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. The Central Atlantic Region consists of almost 700 garden clubs in 7 states with a total of approximately 23,000 members. The award was presented to the RVGC president, Karen Marcus, at the Garden Club of New Jersey’s annual meeting in June at the Bridgewater Marriott.

The award reflects Diane’s many years of service to the RVGC in various capacities including serving as RVGC president from 1974-1976 and heading a number of the club’s committees. She was also recognized for her activities as an ardent environmentalist and preservationist.

Significantly, for over two decades, Diane served as chair of the RVGC’s Emilie Hammond Wildflower Trail Committee (and has been an active committee member for 50 years), which maintains the 4+ acre wildflower/native plant garden in the Tourne County Park. She has used her native plant expertise to educate both club members and the general public, including giving tours of the “Trail” to various groups. She has also documented many species of plants native to New Jersey in part by utilizing her photography skills and by creating a 17-minute video regarding native plants in the New Jersey highlands which is available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ-kCBwmiB8

Part of the mission of the National Garden Clubs, the umbrella organization for the many local garden clubs in the U.S. and its 165,000 members, is to promote environmental responsibility. Diane was recognized for her efforts in this regard as well. She was a member of the “Tourne Coalition,” which was formed in 1974 to oppose a plan to create a reservoir in the Tourne County Park. It would have flooded much of the park, including all of the Wildflower Trail.

Later, Diane opposed a plan to convert the portion of the Tourne that is adjacent to the Rockaway River from meadow to recreational and storage facilities. Her opposition was a significant factor in the plan being rejected. Also, in 2016, when plans were begun by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to log a portion of the Sparta Mountain Wildlife Management Area, Diane was a vocal opponent.
