Summer Sun Safety Tips
from the Board of Health
Spending time outside whether it is swimming, hiking, or taking a walk during the summer months can result in excessive ultraviolet (UV) light exposure. This excessive UV exposure can damage your skin and cause premature aging of the skin as well as skin cancer. The UV Index forecasts the strength of UV sun rays each day. If the UV index is 3 or higher in the area, it is important to protect your skin from too much exposure to the sun. The UV Index can easily be found through an online weather search, which would indicate what the UV Index levels are in your area. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers an easy to follow UV Index scale; https://www.epa.gov/sunsafety/uv-index-scale-0, which can be used to make informed decisions about how much time you should spend in the sun and what protection you should use. Another way to protect yourself against UV exposure when UV Index levels are unknown is to follow the EPA’s “The Shadow Rule”;
“If your shadow is taller than you are (in the early morning and late afternoon), your UV exposure is likely to be lower. If your shadow is shorter than you are (around midday), you are being exposed to higher levels of UV radiation. Seek shade and protect your skin and eyes.”
Engaging in sun-safe behaviors is key to preventing damage to skin cells. Sun-safe behaviors consist of staying in the shade under an umbrella, tree, or other means of shelter. It is important to apply and reapply broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off. Wearing Ultraviolet Protective Factor (UPF) clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants, sunglasses and hats, these can provide protection from UV rays. Simple sun-safe behaviors in the workplace as well as in schools, can encourage both employees and students to protect themselves against harmful UV rays and reduce their risk of developing skin cancer.

BOONTON TOWNSHIP CANNABIS ORDINANCES
in a nutshell
On August 9, 2021 the Township Committee adopted three ordinances relating to the regulation of cannabis in the Township. Here’s what you need to know.
The State Legislature enacted the recreational cannabis law that established six classes of cannabis licenses which municipalities must consider permitting in their community: 1) cultivation, 2) manufacturing/processing, 3) wholesale, 4) distribution, 5) retail and 6) delivery.
Two ordinances adopted by the Township address regulation and prohibition of cannabis. The Township now prohibits all six cannabis licenses in all zones throughout the Township, except that four of those licenses: cultivation, manufacturing/processing, wholesale and distribution, will be permitted only at the existing state-licensed medical cannabis facility at 130 Old Denville Road. Retail sales and delivery are prohibited from the site.
Neither ordinance authorized the expansion of the current operation at the Old Denville Road site. If the property owner of that site wants to expand its operation, a site plan application must be filed before the Planning Board with a public hearing.
The third ordinance revised our alcoholic consumption ordinance to include cannabis and prohibit public cannabis consumption anywhere in the Township, except at a private residence, which is permitted by law.
If the Township failed to adopt theses ordinances by August 21, 2021 (state-imposed deadline), we would have forfeited the right to zone for and restrict these types of business activities anywhere in the Township for five years.
