Township Statement on Drone Sightings
There are increasing reports of drone sightings throughout our region, raising valid concerns about privacy, safety, and security. Please know that the Township is monitoring the situation and remains in contact with County officials and law enforcement about the issue.
New Jersey requires drone operators to be FAA-certified and to adhere to all regulations. The U.S. Army Picatinny Arsenal facility in neighboring Rockaway Township, has been declared a "No-Fly-Zone" by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Citizens are asked to report any concerning drone activity they witness to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit details online at tips.fbi.gov. Only in cases of an emergency, please direct calls to 9-1-1 and our police department; otherwise, use the FBI 800 number.
When doing so, please provide as much detail as possible, such as:
1. Time and Date: Record when you observed the drone.
2. Location/Direction: Note the exact location of the sighting (street, neighborhood, or nearby landmarks) and the direction from which it traveled.
3. Appearance: Describe any distinguishing features, such as size, color, or lighting.
4. Behavior: Explain what the drone was doing, i.e., hovering, moving erratically, or lingering in one spot.
Together, we can ensure our Township remains safe and drone usage compliant. Thank you for your vigilance and cooperation.
